2015–16 Middle States Accreditation Update

As academic year 2015–16 gets underway, so does the final year of IUP’s accreditation decennial review with the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE). This year marks the last year in a three-year preparatory process that will culminate in the IUP Middle States Self Study and an on-campus visit from a Middle States peer review team in April 2016.

IUP’s decennial review has been a participatory process, with members from all areas of the campus community contributing. The process has been coordinated by a 34-member steering committee appointed in fall 2013. Throughout 2014–15 seven subcommittees, each led by a team of two co-chairs and consisting of over 140 members, gathered data to answer research questions relating to the 14 Middle States Characteristics of Excellence and to construct a report.

Over this past summer, faculty writer Ben Rafoth and steering committee cochairs Laura Delbrugge and Hilliary Creely combined the information from the subcommittees’ reports into an early draft of the Self Study. The draft is currently being reviewed and edited by the steering committee. It is expected that the final draft of the Self Study will be available for public comment in October.

The steering committee will be seeking feedback from all members of the campus community. Starting in October, feedback can be provided via an online comment form or in person at one of our three scheduled public forums:

  • Wednesday, October 14 from 9:30–11:00 a.m. (Gorell Recital Hall)
  • Wednesday, October 14 from 5:00–6:30 p.m. (Gorell Recital Hall)
  • Thursday, October 15 from 2:00–3:30 p.m. (Gorell Recital Hall)

Shortly after the public review period, IUP’s visiting team chair will make a preliminary visit to campus on November 2 and 3 to evaluate and provide constructive feedback on our preparations for the April 10–13 full team visit.

The steering committee is very grateful for all the support and participation the campus community has already provided in this important process and especially for the dedicated efforts of the subcommittee cochairs and members. The steering committee asks that you continue to provide feedback and support the process as IUP moves into this final exciting year of the decennial review.
