Food and Nutrition Faculty Member Co-Authors Article on Nutrient-Rich Foods Index Algorithm

Idamarie LaquatraIdamarie Laquatra, Department of Food and Nutrition, co-authored an article titled “Applying a Nutrient-Rich Foods Index Algorithm to Address Nutrient Content of Food Bank Food” that was published in the May 2015 issue of the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The algorithm, developed by Laquatra and co-authors, applied a numeric score to a food depending upon its nutrient quality and its prevalence in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

Developed in 2002 and updated over the years, the algorithm was applied to the 27 million pounds of food distributed by the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank in 2014, showing that nutritious food is provided to hungry families.
