Biology Department Professor Tom Simmons was featured in a television news segment on the Lyme disease epidemic in western Pennsylvania. Simmons was interviewed in his Disease and Vector Ecology Laboratory at IUP by Maria Simbra, medical reporter for KDKA-TV, CBS–Pittsburgh.

They discussed the ecology of the blacklegged tick and factors underlying its spread into western Pennsylvania. They also discussed the abundance of the tick, the percent infected with the Lyme disease pathogen, and how western Pennsylvania now compares with southeastern New York, where the tick and pathogen have historically been highly endemic.

Excerpts from the interview were aired during the 6:00 news hour on Friday, June 26. The news segment can be viewed on the CBS Pittsburgh website.
