Friday, July 17, marks the third seminar of the Research Experience for Summer Scholars (RESS) program. The seminar, which is open to the public, starts at 11:30 a.m. in 240 Weyandt Hall with Savannah Irwin, a geoscience student, presenting her research.

Irwin is working under the direction of geoscience professor John Taylor during the 10-week summer program.

The Cookes Member of the Hitt Canyon Formation is package of microbial reefs and associated facies of Starisian (early Ordovician) age in New Mexico and west Texas. A recently published biozonation for the Stairsian Stage in western Utah (Adrain et. al, 2014) allows for refined correlation of our sections across southern New Mexico and west Texas to those in Utah.

Rapid turnover of various trilobite genera, including Hystricurus, Psudeoclelandia, and Hyperbolocilus allow recognition of some of the new biozones within the Cookes Member. This project aimed to establish the presence or absence of said biozones within the member, as well as general faunal description.

A genus-level inventory conducted on seven collections from the Hitt Canyon Formation in four measure sections reveal a lacuna (time gap) between the Cookes Member and the overlying Jose Member, excluding up to four of the Utah biozones. A reassessment of the stratigraphy, to include the thickness of rock missing based on the Ibex section, generates a rock accumulation line more accurate to the biostratigraphy then previously assumed.

About the Research Experience for Summer Scholars (RESS) Program

The IUP College of Natural Science and Mathematics’ RESS program provides students with hands-on research experiences in their fields of study with one-on-one faculty engagement. The program fosters student professional development with events that promote growth such as workshops, networking opportunities, and chances to present scientific work. The summer’s events are capped with a world-class keynote speaker and a poster session in August. This year, we are happy to host our keynote speaker, Alan Russell, for his speech “Innovation and Disruption in Health Care.”

Questions about the RESS program can be directed to Justin Fair at
