the fantasy-filled musical Into the Woods
at 8:00 p.m. on April 16, 2015. Performances will continue April 17 and 18 at 8:00

As the story goes, once upon a
time a baker and his wife wished to have a child, Cinderella wished to attend
the King’s Festival, and Jack—of Beanstalk fame—wished his cow would give some
milk.
When everyone’s wishes are
granted, the consequences of their self-centered actions come to haunt them.
Eventually, they learn a poignant lesson about working together, the stories we
tell our children, and the real meaning of “happily ever after.”
Into the Woods is the award-winning musical featuring music and
lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and based on the book by James Lapine. It debuted on
Broadway in 1987 and garnered many awards during its initial Broadway run. The
highly acclaimed show spawned numerous national tours and revivals and remains
one of the American theater’s best-loved musicals to produce.
Most recently, it was released
as a major motion picture with a star-studded cast and directed by Pittsburgh
native and Pennsylvania Governor’s Awards for the Arts recipient Rob Marshall.
When asked about the film, IUP
theater faculty member and the production’s director Rob Gretta explained, “I
enjoyed the movie, and one can definitely appreciate it as a film. For me, live
and immediate storytelling will always win. Personally, I think, the
audience will have a significantly enriching experience.”
This production contains some
situations that may not be suitable for younger children.
