Recent Acquisitions Highlight as University Museum Goes Downtown

Since July 2013, over 50 new art works have been acquired by the University Museum at Indiana University of Pennsylvania through purchase and donation. Beginning April 7, 2015, many of these new works will be on display at the Artists Hand Gallery as the University Museum Goes Downtown.

The recent acquisitions support the Museum’s mission to bring the arts and material history of the region together to encourage exploration, dialogue, and enjoyment through works from regional artists. These artists include Orval Kipp, Jean Slenker, Net O. Wert, Chuck Olson, Robert Cronauer, Lila Hetzel, James Innes, and Robert Hamilton ranging from oil and acrylic paintings to mixed media on paper, silkscreen, and silver jewelry.

The University Museum’s permanent collection has also been bolstered by multiple drawings by Milton H. Bancroft and donated by retired IUP faculty artist Robert Hamilton. Bancroft was an American artist who was active early in the 20th century.

The drawings join over 200 works already held in the Museum’s Bancroft Collection set to be exhibited within the next few years. Two of the six new additions will be at the Artists Hand.

Patrons will also have the opportunity to enjoy works from recent Museum exhibitions. Included will be “Horned Guan, Mexico” by David Tomb and “Men of Iron” and “The Ogun Sisters,” both by Willie Cole.

The recent acquisitions on display, among others, were made possible by gifts and purchases supported by the Museum’s annual fundraising gala and by art-purchase accounts established with the Foundation for IUP by Tweed and Charles Davis and by Peg and David Purdy.

The exhibition runs Tuesday, April 7, through Saturday, May 2, with a public reception Friday, April 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Admission to the exhibit and reception is free.

The Artists Hand Gallery, located at 732 Philadelphia Street in downtown Indiana, is open Tuesday through Thursday 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; Friday 10:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.; Saturday 10:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.; and beginning April 6, Monday 8:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. The Gallery is closed on Sundays.
