Fourth Annual IUP Professional Development Workshop Held

On March 27, 2015, nearly 140 faculty, staff, and graduate students from multiple university divisions and each of the academic colleges attended the workshop “Successful IUP Students Today and Tomorrow,” sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs and cosponsored by the Center for Teaching Excellence and Office of the Provost.

Using national research and IUP-specific information, the workshop provided an opportunity for participants to better understand and participate in a collaborative dialogue related to the challenges and opportunities in preparing students for success, addressing Goal Two of IUP’s draft Strategic Plan: “prepare all of IUP’s students for success in work and life, in addition to academic success.”

Opening remarks by President Michael Driscoll were followed with a presentation, “IUP Enrollment: Trends and Outlook,” by James Begany, vice president for Enrollment Management and Communications. Provost Timothy Moerland provided additional comments related to the roles of those attending with student success. Matt Pellish, senior director of strategic research at EAB, Washington, D.C. delivered the keynote address, “Using Higher Education Keys to Open Doors for Student Success.”

Following the keynote, both Pellish and EAB consultant Molly O’Connor facilitated breakout sessions which followed on the topics “Programmatic Roadblocks to Student Success” and “Increasing Undergraduate Student Engagement and Retention.”
