Guitar-Cello Duo Returns in Ovations! Series

Continuing its 25th anniversary season, the Lively Arts will present the return of the Jones Maruri Duo as part of this year’s Ovations! series at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Based in Spain, the cello and guitar duo will perform at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, 2015, in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of IUP’s Sutton Hall.

Formed in 1990, the Jones Maruri Duo is comprised of British-born cellist Michael Kevin Jones and Agustin Maruri, a guitarist born in Madrid, Spain. Thought to be the only duo of its kind touring internationally, they record on a regular basis and actively perform around the world, including Europe, North America, Asia, Australia, the Middle East, Cuba, Venezuela, the U.K., and South America.

The special richness and rare tonal beauty of the cello and guitar partnership, along with their wide range and musical diversity in their stage and recorded programs, have shaped their unique character.

In 1999, Jones and Maruri recorded The Charm of Spain for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, a collection of Spanish romantic melodies from the 19th century performed on instruments from the museum’s collection. This has now become an ongoing series with these two musicians who have privileged access to the rare historical instruments in the MMA collection for their use in solo or duo recordings.

Having first performed at IUP in October 2009, this performance will include works from the 17th century through the 20th and will also feature a special work for piano with IUP piano professor and touring concert pianist Henry Wong Doe.

Tickets for the April 9 event are available now online or the Lively Arts’ online ticketing website. They can also be purchased at the Hadley Union Building ticket office on the IUP campus or by calling the HUB ticket office at (724) 357-1313.

Any seats remaining will be sold at the door starting one 45 minutes prior to the performance. Tickets are priced at $22 for regular admission, $18 for seniors and groups, and $12 for students and children.

The Ovations! series is funded, in part, by donations through the Premiere Club, business sponsorships, grants, and the IUP Student Cooperative Association. The Lively Arts, a program of the College of Fine Arts, presents nearly 200 performances, programs, and exhibits annually.
