Todd Thompson (associate professor of English, MA coordinator) and Jessica Showalter (recent graduate of the PhD in the Literature and Criticism program) have published an edited, online edition of an 1847 James Russell Lowell poem in the journal Scholarly Editing. Titled “Satire in Circulation: James Russell Lowell’s ‘Letter from a Volunteer in Saltillo’,” this edition introduces and presents eight versions of this often-reprinted poem in their original publication contexts.

The edition highlights the interplay between poetry, satire, and news during the U.S.-Mexico War of 1846–48 and shows how meaning shifts depending on publication context.

The Scholarly Editing edition is the first instantiation of a larger, ongoing effort by Thompson and Showalter to create an interactive, in-context, digital edition featuring periodical reprints of all nine of Lowell’s anti-war Hosea Biglow poems.
