The Department of Theater and Dance and Department of Music at
Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present “An Evening of Dance and
Percussion” at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, 2015. The performance will be
held in Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts Center. The event is part of the Lively Arts’ Dance Theater and Sound Choices series.
The production represents an ongoing collaboration between director
of IUP Dance Theater Holly Boda-Sutton and director of IUP’s Percussion
Ensemble Michael Kingan. Choreographers include Boda-Sutton, Joan Van Dyke,
Anna Ponak-Shively, and guest artist Toneta Akers-Toler of the West Virginia
Dance Company.
This concert takes on a different beat as the two ensembles
combine their talents to bring both traditional and unusual performances to the
stage.
The pieces range from the classical music of Camille
Saint-Saens to the classical rock of Steely Dan’s “Josie.” Audiences will hear
Motown music of the Stylistics, the more contemporary pop Gotye’s “Somebody I
Used to Know,” and more.
A highlight of the evening is a tribute to our military
veterans which shares the stories of guest veteran performers. The piece, “Stars
and Stripes and Eagles Fly,” also features the solo voice of Joseph Baunoch backed
by the IUP Chorale and Hawkappella Choir under the direction of Ryan Beeken. Baunouch and Beeken are
both members of the IUP music faculty.
