On February 14 and 15, 2015, the IUP Mock Trial
Team competed at the American Mock Trial Competition, which featured teams from
New York University, Michigan State, Carnegie Mellon, and Kent State.
In only our second appearance at this competition
in recent years, mock trial president Emily Gaertner,
philosophy/pre-law and criminology,
won best overall attorney, out-performing a field of over 150 other student competitors. In addition,
the IUP Mock Trial Team won the American Mock Trial Association award for
Spirit, which is awarded to the team that best upholds the values of
the competition, including teamwork, enthusiasm, and cooperation.
The round-robin competition is based on a
complex national legal case which requires the students to conduct a full trial
with witnesses, cross examinations, and exhibits and follow the federal rules of
evidence. It requires the student to devise a proper trial strategy, implement
good questioning, and incorporate evidence in an effective manner.
“I applaud the team for all of their
hard work and effort,” said Brion Scudder, Finance and Legal Studies
