Graham: Martha Graham Dance Company as part of its Ovations! series. Essential
Graham will take place one night only, on Monday,
March 2, 2015, at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts
Essential Graham is a collection of dance pieces that
brings to life Martha Graham’s revolutionary creative career through the use of
narrative and classic Graham selections.
late Martha Graham is recognized as one of the greatest dancers and
choreographers of the 20th century. She was a leader in the
development of contemporary dance and created a movement language based upon
the expressive capacity of the human body.
founded the Martha Graham Dance Company in 1926 when she started teaching a
group of dancers who had been drawn to her creative work. Her vision crossed all
artistic boundaries, collaborating with leading visual artists, musicians, and
designers of her day. Graham’s groundbreaking techniques and style have earned
the Company acclaim from audiences and the highest respect in more than 50
countries across the globe.
Company, which continues to set the standard for modern dance, has nurtured and
inspired many of the leading choreographers and dancers of the 20th and 21st centuries. The troupe now embraces a new programming vision
that showcases masterpieces by Graham, her contemporaries, and their successors
alongside newly commissioned works by contemporary artists inspired by Graham’s
