Darrin MikulaDarrin Mikula, chief financial officer for the Community Guidance Center in Indiana, Pa. became one of the Pittsburgh Business Times’ CFO of the Year award winners.

The CFO of the Year Award recognizes financial professionals in western Pennsylvania for outstanding performance as corporate financial officers in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors.

Mikula received his bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and his MBA from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 2010 he joined Community Guidance as a controller and in May 2013 become CFO.

One of the main challenges Mikula faced was getting Community Guidance Center’s financial situation out of the red after its merger with Clearfield-Jefferson in 2007. This required hours of creating new policy and procedure manuals, new bank accounts, and accounting and payroll changes.

Eventually, he was able to bring the company into the black again by introducing new sources of revenue, such as telepsychiatry, and cutting out operational inefficiencies.

“Attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s MBA program allowed me to expand my education and also gain practical experience by working part-time in the business department,” said Mikula during an e-mail interview on December 9. “My time at IUP was both personally and professionally rewarding and further prepared me to embark upon my career.”
