On November 12, 2014, 22 members of the Gamma Xi Chapter of Phi Gamma Nu traveled to Chicago, Illinois.
The trip started with a walk to PPM America, where members met with Jim Leda, a managing director in the Debt Restructuring Group at PPM America. He is responsible for managing the firm’s distressed investments and has more than 17 years of experience in this field. He is a 1995 graduate of IUP and was inducted into the Eberly Hall of Distinction in the spring of 2013.
Leda walked the members through the different steps in his career path and discussed how each one contributed to his career and himself as a professional. He also took time to answer questions that the members had, and offered to connect some of the members with professionals who worked in their areas of study.
After the members met with Leda, they traveled to a local Italian restaurant to meet with IUP alumni Varun Satyanarayana (class of 2011), Arun Gupta (class of 2012), and Ganesh Athreya (class of 2012). Satyanarayana and Gupta are Oracle EBS functional consultants, and Athreya is a financial business analyst. These alumni graciously hosted a dinner meeting where they were able to share their experiences and offer advice as to the best ways to transition from college to the professional world. This also gave the members the chance to try some of Chicago’s famous deep-dish pizzas.
Members concluded the professional portion of the trip with a presentation at the Federal Reserve Bank, Chicago Branch. A speaker discussed what the Federal Reserve does, relevant issues affecting operations, and answered any questions that the members had. They were then given the opportunity to tour the Money Museum located inside the branch.
After the presentation at the Federal Reserve, members had time to explore the city. Some of the destinations included Memorial Park, Willis Tower, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Chicago Orchestra Hall. It was amazing to see all of the various things that the city had to offer our young professionals. Phi Gamma Nu’s trip to Chicago was a great success and provided the members with many great experiences.
