American Opera Presented by IUP Music Theater

IUP Music Theater will present the iconic American opera The Tender Land. Presented also as part of the Lively Arts’ Sound Choices series, the production will be performed December 4–6, 2014, at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, December 7, at 2:00 p.m. on the Waller Hall Mainstage of the IUP Performing Arts Center.

With music by quintessential American composer Aaron Copland and a libretto by Horace Everett, the story is set in the rural American Midwest of the 1930s. It was Copland’s only full-length opera and was inspired by the writing and Depression-era photographs in James Agee’s and Walker Evans’s book Let Us Now Praise Famous Men.

This coming-of-age tale centers on Laurie Moss, soon to be a high school graduate. Laurie meets Martin, a drifter who picks up work on her family’s farm. When she begins to grow attached to him, she must make the choice of whether to remain in her quiet farming community or leave the life behind that she has always known.

The production is directed by Tania Arazi Coambs and conducted by Jack Stamp, both faculty members of the IUP Department of Music. The production also features IUP alumnus Curt Scheib in the role of Grandpa Moss.

Tickets can be purchased in advance online, or the Lively Arts. Tickets may also be purchased at the Hadley Union Building or by calling 724-357-1313. Any tickets remaining will be sold at the door starting 45 minutes before each performance.

Seating is by general admission and tickets are priced at $18 for regular admission, $15 for senior citizens, and $12 for I-Card holders, students, and children.
