Jan HumphreysThe Pennsylvania Vector Control Association (PVCA) honored IUP Biology professor emeritus Jan Humphreys at its 2014 conference by announcing that it had changed the name of its student award to the Dr. Jan G. Humphreys PVCA Academic Award for Student Research in Vector Control.

Humphreys was instrumental in establishing the award in 1999 and has served as the chairperson of the awards committee since its inception.

Each year, the committee recognizes excellence in undergraduate or graduate student research by selecting a nominee/applicant, who then presents his/her research at the annual conference and receives a $300 monetary award. Past recipients from IUP include Sharon Shultz, 1999 (mentor, Jan Humphreys); Johnathan Madill, 2005 (mentor, Bill Brenneman); and Tom Merkel, 2010 (mentor, Tom Simmons).

Simmons was invited to present his research on “The Indestructible Blacklegged Tick: Lessons Learned from Western Pennsylvania.”

The PVCA conference was held in State College, Pa., October 29–31.
