Margaret Reardon of the Psychology Department will present the Sigma Xi Fall Lecture, “The Jury on Trial,” on November 11, 2014, at 7:00 p.m. in Pratt Auditorium.

Each fall, Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society, invites a local scholar to give a presentation of current research. This fall’s speaker is Margaret Reardon of the Psychology Department. Reardon works in the area of legal psychology, specifically in juror and jury decision making. The jury is both one of the most revered and reviled institutions of our criminal justice system. Most Americans seem to believe that a public trial by a jury of our peers is the standard for justice, yet much criticism is levied at the decisions that juries make. Reardon’s presentation will discuss some of the critiques of juror and jury decision making and will present some research aimed at improving the decisions jurors make.

Sigma Xi is the honor society of scientists and engineers. Sigma Xi was designed to reward excellence in scientific research and to encourage a sense of companionship and cooperation among scientists in all fields.
