Stay Safe When Social Networking

Social networks, such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google+, provide terrific ways to communicate with friends and family and to network professionally. However, careful consideration should be used when sharing information online. What you share can be damaging to your reputation, prevent you from getting a job, and result in identity theft.

When social networking, keep the following in mind to stay safe

  • Think twice before posting. Once shared on the Web, information is nearly impossible to erase.
  • Be aware of what others post about you, and speak up when information is posted against your wishes.
  • Use the privacy and security settings on each social network to control who has access to your information.
  • Take action against harassment. Report bullying, harassment, and stalking to site administrators or to the appropriate authorities.
