As the 25th season of the Lively Arts at IUP continues, the Ovation! series will present Strings and Serpents, an international collaboration that explores a synthesis of Japanese and Western structures by merging musical and visual form. This original contemporary work will be performed October 22, 2014, at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of Sutton Hall.

Strings and Serpents was created through a joint effort among pianists Andy Milne and Benoît Delbecq, animator Saki Murotani, and the Japanese TsuguKaji-KOTO duo of Ai Kajigano and Tsugumi Yamamoto. Milne is considered one of the most respected voices in jazz today and is the recipient of numerous commissions and honors including the prestigious Civitella Ranieri fellowship. Delbecq is a Parisian pianist whose influence has been recognized by critics. His latest CD was noted by the New York Times as one of the 10 albums of the year.

This combination of piano and koto duos seamlessly blends traditional and modern music with the textures of jazz and contemporary improvisation. The animation, based on the Rainbow Serpent mythology, uses both 2-D and 3-D computer-generated imagery projected along with the music. The story is told without dialogue or subtitles and elegantly displays a visual composition exploring color, shape, and form.

Tickets for this October 22 performance are available now at the Hadley Union Building ticket office on the IUP campus or online, or the Lively Arts. Tickets can also be purchased by calling the HUB ticket office at (724) 257-1313. Remaining tickets can be purchased at the door starting 45 minutes prior to the performance. Tickets are priced at $22 for regular admission, $18 for senior citizens and groups, and $12 for students and children.
