members of the Barkada Quartet are Shane Rathburn, soprano saxophone; Martí Comas, alto saxophone;
Steven Lawhon, tenor saxophone; and Justin Polyblank, baritone saxophone.
Said to display “virtuosity of
the utmost distinctive order” (Splash
Magazine), the quartet is the first saxophone quartet to capture the
Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition’s coveted Grand Prize by winning
all five rounds of competition in 2012. Formed in 2011 at the Indiana
University Bloomington Jacobs School of Music, Barkada Quartet’s individual
members share a friendship and musical camaraderie of such strength that their
performances are said to be reminiscent of “watching a group of men having a
chat at the water cooler.”
Barkada Quartet’s 2014–15 season
will feature the release of their first full-length album, Aventura, the launch of an ambitious commissioning project, and
several public performances. The Quartet’s concert performances have garnered
recognition both at home and abroad. Most recently, the Quartet was one of just
four American chamber ensembles to participate in the open division of the eighth Osaka International Chamber Music Competition and Festa.
In March 2014, they performed
David Maslanka’s Concerto for Saxophone
Quartet & Wind Ensemble with the Indiana University Symphonic Band
under the baton of Jeffery Gershman, and during summer 2013 Barkada Quartet
enjoyed a weeklong concert tour throughout Northern Italy as part of an annual
collaboration between Fischoff and the Emilia Romagna Festival.
