Litton Quartet Performs October 7

The Sound Choices series, representing IUP Music Department’s premier performances, will present the Litton Quartet on October 7, 2014, at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of John Sutton Hall.

The Litton, IUP’s resident faculty string quartet, will perform its first concert of the new season. The program includes two of the most experimental works of the Classic era, including Haydn’s op. 76 no.6 and Beethoven’s op 95, “The Serioso.”

The Haydn work is the finale of his remarkable set of six quartets making up opus 76. It includes a mysterious second movement titled “Fantasia,” which explores wide ranging harmonies and modulations not typical of Haydn’s time.

The Beethoven work gives us the first glimpse of the composer’s transformation into his mystical, late period of composition.

The Litton will also perform two pieces by first violinist Stanley Chepaitis from his ballet The Ugly Duckling, which premiered in May 2014 with choreography by Joan VanDyke.

Tickets are available in advance at the Hadley Union Building, by calling 724-35-1313, online, or the Lively Arts.

Tickets are $11 regular admission, $9 for senior citizens, and $7 for I-Card holders, students, and children. For more information, contact the Lively Arts at 724-357-2787.
