Carl LeBlond of the Chemistry Department has developed three new Moodle question-type plugins based on the JavaScript chemical editor MarvinJS.

All three question types have been reviewed and approved by the Moodle plugin team and are available for download from the Moodle plugin directory. These question types do not require insecure Java browser plugins and are much easier to implement in a secure environment.

LeBlond’s suite of question types are simple to use and provide unprecedented assessment of student knowledge in chemistry. They have been downloaded over 5,000 times.

The new question types approved by the Moodle plugin team include:

  • Naming Question Type: Students are required to draw a chemical structure or reaction.
  • Mechanism and Curved Arrow Question Type: Students provide curved arrows for reaction mechanisms and resonance structure generation.
  • Selection Question Type: Students are queried to select atoms or molecules.
