Bryna Siegel Finer, Department of English, will present her paper, “As a Mutant, I Have a Super Power: The Rhetoric of the Breast Cancer Gene,” at the Western States National Rhetoric and Literacy Conference in Reno, Nevada, in November 2014.

Siegel Finer, a published activist in the movement for awareness of BRCA gene mutations, will analyze the rhetorical elements in public messages about BRCA, including their genres (particularly blogs and memoirs); their audiences (previvors and survivors); and their purposes—with some discussion of Angelina Jolie’s 2013 announcement of her preventative double mastectomy.
