Daniel J. WeinsteinEnglish professor Daniel J. Weinstein gave a workshop titled “Freely, Aptly, Deeply: Sensitizing Student Writers to a Transcendent Vision of Textuality” at the 2014 Annual Conference of the Assembly for Expanded Perspectives on Learning, held June 25–28 at Laurentian University in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada.

Weinstein combined two activities that figure significantly in his research and teaching: mindfulness meditation and short writing exercises that encourage students to encounter source materials with empathy and compassion.

He shared writing activities designed to embolden writers to become transcendent readers who seek to move beyond static meanings, embracing the infinite potential of all meaning by cultivating a willingness to endlessly complicate each text's textuality, responding freely, aptly, and noticing deeply the ever shifting multiplicity of textual significance.

Weinstein will reprise the workshop as an event for IUP students later this fall.
