Indiana native Mark Bender is an illustrator for a wide
variety of prominent regional and national companies. This summer, the
University Museum at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will feature his work
in “Pencil Paint Pixel: 29 Years of Visual Communication.” The exhibition opens Saturday, June 7, and will
run through Saturday, July 26, 2014, during the museum’s summer hours.
The public is invited to the opening reception on Thursday,
June 12, from 5:00–8:00 p.m. The University Museum is located in IUP’s Sutton Hall,
and admission to the exhibit and reception is free.
Bender’s images illustrate advertising campaigns, magazines
and annual reports, packaging, CD covers, children’s books, posters, and
murals. Among his clients are IBM, Sony Music, NFL, Heinz USA, Pittsburgh
Pirates, UPMC (Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and Magee Hospital), Carnegie
Mellon University, Heinz History Center, University of Texas at Austin,
University of Chicago, National Public Radio, and Simon & Schuster.
His work has received international recognition in Communication Arts magazine, Applied Arts Magazine (Canada), 200 Best Illustrators Worldwide
(Lurzer’s Archive), 3x3 Annual, Creative Quarterly, New York Society of
Illustrators Museum, and Illustration
Bender describes his distinctive style as “classically
inspired and hand crafted, combining traditional media with contemporary
technology to create compelling imagery...” He draws inspiration from vintage
advertising of the 1920s and ’30s, WPA art, and historical propaganda posters.
Bender is a faculty member at the Art Institute of
Pittsburgh, where he was honored in 2008 with the Inez C. Hall Outstanding
Faculty Award and in 2004 with the Faculty Leadership Award. He is
professionally affiliated with the New York Society of Illustrators and is a
founding member of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators, second largest
professional illustration society in the United States.
The museum’s summer hours are Wednesdays, 11:00 a.m–7:00
p.m; Thursdays, 3:00–7:00 p.m.; and Saturdays, 1:00–5:00 p.m. The museum will
be closed July 4.
