Kirsten Messner '13 accepts her IPod Mini from Zac Saeva, assistant director

Kirsten Messner, a 2013 graduate of IUP with a degree in Interior Design, recently accepted an iPod Mini from Zac Saeva, assistant director, which she won after responding to the graduate survey conducted each year by the Career and Professional Development Center.

Messner says she responded to the e-mail survey request because of something she learned in one of her classes.

“I always used to get annoyed with surveys until my senior year at IUP, when I took a marketing class that was required for my major, and in this class we talked a lot about surveys and we had to create one,” Messner said. “After I realized how important and helpful they can really be, I decided that I would start to take them if someone asked me since feedback is very important!”

Messner has her own interior design and staging firm, and credits some of the services provided by the Career and Professional Development Center, including the Mock Interview program and the Etiquette Dinner, with helping her prepare for interacting with the business world.

“From the interview standpoint, it helped me realize what I was doing wrong and allowed me to make adjustments to be able to feel comfortable and have a great interview,” Messner said. “As for the etiquette dinner, it prepared me for interacting with others. There have been multiple times where I have had to go to a lunch or dinner with other business people or clients, and I feel comfortable in those situations now.”

According to Saeva, the graduate destination survey is a helpful resource to demonstrate the quality experience of IUP graduates, and the information is utilized both within the Career and Professional Development Center and with prospective students and employers.

“Without this data, it is challenging to demonstrate the outcomes of an IUP education,” Saeva said, “So we highly encourage recent graduates to fill out the survey.”

The next graduate survey will be conducted later this year and will include August and December 2013 and May 2014 graduates.
