By Emily Smeltz, Director of Annual Giving
For many of the students you see in your classrooms and offices each day, financing tuition and fees for is a semester-by-semester struggle. Others might be able to come up with the funds for tuition and fees but then may run short on funds for books, supplies, and extras that can take a solid education to the next level.
Dean’s Merit Scholarship funds were created in each college to recognize and assist outstanding IUP students who work hard, who set the bar high, and who will graduate to impact their professions and our communities. The cost of higher education continues to rise, as do concerns surrounding debt after graduation. Dean's Merit Scholarship funds help to alleviate some of the burden and enable our students to spend time honing their skills in our libraries and labs, versus working multiple part-time jobs to make ends meet.
The best part of my job is interviewing Dean’s Merit Scholarship recipients each year. I am consistently impressed by their poise and by all they are accomplishing. I received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees here at IUP, and I am proud to say that Dean's Merit Scholarship awardees will soon join me among our fabulous alumni. Most impressive, their expressions of gratitude to our donors are so heartfelt. Many times, awards from these scholarships are what enable these students to maintain enrollment. It makes me feel really good about the work I do.
Faculty and staff members can contribute to the Dean’s Merit Scholarship funds through the University Family Drive by referencing the following fund numbers:
Already, the University Family Drive is more than 50 percent to its goal of 550 donors. The drive runs through April 4. Visit the University Family Drive page at www.iup.edu/universityfamily to find more information on how your participation in the drive helps IUP students, to download a pledge form, or to make an electronic commitment via payroll deduction. You may also make an immediate gift with your credit card.
