Theater-by-the Grove at Indiana University of Pennsylvania
will present its first production of the Spring 2014 semester titled The Monster In The Garden by Caridad
Svich. The work is freely adapted and translated from Calderón de la Barca’s El Monstruo en el Jardin. The production
will open on the Waller Hall Mainstage on Thursday, February 20, at 8:00 p.m.
It will also be performed February 21–22 and February 26–March 1 at 8:00 p.m. and
Sunday, February 23, at 2:00 p.m.
In the story, a wild child lives on an enchanted island. One day
he comes upon a young woman and experiences the tumult of love in his heart for
the first time and sets out in its pursuit. The only problem is that this wild
child happens to be Achilles. This gender-bending, provocative, and
simultaneously provocative romantic comedy asks all of us to believe in a
Director Rick Kemp says, “This production of The Monster in the
Garden makes history by being the first time that the
play has been performed in English. Performed in Spain in 1667 and 2000, the
story rewrites the myth of Achilles’ early life, when he was hidden by his
mother, the sea-goddess Thetis, to protect him from his fate.”
Kemp goes on to explain, “We are honored to be chosen by one of
America’s leading playwrights, Caridad Svich, to be the first to present her
adapted translation. The play is great fun and at the same time contains some

its world premiere on the Waller stage. A romantic comedy by 17th-century playwright Pedro Calderón de la Barca is given new life by
award-winning playwright Caridad Svich. This gender-bending, provocative
