The University Museum at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will open its annual Emerging Artist exhibit on Tuesday, February 4, 2014. The exhibit celebrates six students in the final stages of their graduate work in art at IUP.

Threat II, by Liz DabecoThese students are enrolled in the Master of Fine Arts degree program, signaling the highest level of academic achievement for artists in the United States. Culminating three years of hard work, the artworks on view explore the intersection of each medium’s tradition, contemporary practice, and personal vision. Those exhibiting include Laurie Barnes, sculpture; Michelle Colbough, painting; Liz Dabecco, mixed media; Lucy McInnes, ceramics; Araina Marsden, ceramics; and Erika Stearly, painting.

The exhibition will be installed across three IUP venues: the University Museum, located on the first floor of Sutton Hall; and the Kipp Gallery and the Kipp Annex Gallery, both located on the first floor of Sprowls Hall.

Museum hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2:00–6:30 p.m.; Thursday, noon–7:30 p.m.; and Saturday noon–4:00 p.m. The University Museum is closed Sunday, Monday, and university holidays.

The exhibition will run through March 22 in the museum and until February 27 in the Kipp galleries. A public reception will be held on Saturday, February 8, from 6:00–8:30 p.m.

Pictured above are two pieces, including a mixed media drawing,“Threat II,” by Liz Dabeco. The work references the presence of both child and adult. The layers allude to the experiences of the adult subject, the adult’s influence on the child, and the child's perception of the adult. This combination reveals a repetitive cycle of influence.

The second piece is from an installation at the Carrie Furnaces, "paradox, 1901," by Laurie Barnes. It investigates the overlaps of language, power, and domestic life. Inspired by the general absence of female experience in the U.S. steel industry, she brings allusions of home into the blast furnace site.
