A four-year scholarship created by Alcoa Foundation in memory of an Indiana University of Pennsylvania alumna has been awarded to a Pittsburgh area student.

Veronica Caro, a freshman chemistry major from Swissvale, has been awarded the Janell Abbott Memorial Chemistry Scholarship, a renewable scholarship that affords Caro $10,000 per year for four years.

Alcoa Foundation granted IUP $40,000 for the scholarship to commemorate Abbott, a 2004 IUP graduate who worked for Alcoa and died in 2012. Abbott majored in chemistry and minored in mathematics.

Caro, the daughter of Nelson and Susan Caro of Swissvale, is enrolled in IUP’s Cook Honors College. A graduate of Agora Cyber Charter School, she is a member of the American Chemical Society and the Catholic Student Association.
