Once a year, Deepavali or Diwali, the festival of lights, is celebrated by people from several religions of India. For communities of Hindu religions in particular, the celebrations commemorate the triumph of good over evil.

This year, on November 2, 2013, a group of Religious Studies students along with Harold Morales from the Religious Studies Department attended the Diwali celebrations at the Sri Venkateswara Hindu Temple in Pittsburgh, where several puja devotional rituals were performed, music was played, short impromptu lectures were given, dinner was shared, and fireworks filled the night sky.

For the Religious Studies students who attended, it was a unique experience with the rich multicultural traditions that thrive within and contribute to America’s pluralistic societies.
