Students prepared for their professional careers at the second annual Backpack to Briefcase workshop series, hosted by the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology the week of September 23, 2013.
The 17-session event was geared toward teaching students the skills necessary to get a job, including networking, interviewing, researching, and job hunting. The sessions were run by Eberly faculty and by staff from the Center for Family Business and the Career Development Center.
Business partners also assisted with the event. PLS Logistics Services talent acquisition specialist Jessica Sanders held one-on-one resume reviews and mock interviews to get students comfortable with the interviewing process, while S&T Bank executive vice president and
director of human resources and employee communications Becky Stapleton assisted with the interviewing tips and techniques presentation. BPU Investments managing director Nadav Baum also presented on how to be successful in the business world.
The workshop series began Monday with “Resumes and Cover Letters,” “Looking for Jobs on the Internet,” and “Professional Development Before You Become a Professional.”
The “Effective Networking” session, led by Kara Romance, focused on how to formally and informally network, how to make a positive first impression, how to use social networking to positively market yourself, and tools to have to develop your personal brand, such as resumes and business
Students who attended the session said it was very helpful and insightful.

Tuesday’s sessions included “Effective Networking,” “International Student Job Search,” a Wall Street Journal presentation and “Interviewing Tips and Techniques.”
Nadav Baum, managing director of Investments at BPU Investments, spoke about how to take advantage of resources within Eberly to make the most out of a college education.
The workshop continued on Wednesday with sessions called “Resumes and Cover Letters,” “Social Media Job Search,” “Dress for Success,” “How to use SIMPLICITY to Search for Jobs,” and “Internships and Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator.”
On Thursday, “Company Research Using Library Databases,” “Navigating Career Fairs,” and another “Interviewing Tips and Techniques” workshop were offered.
The workshop series ended Friday with a PLS Logistics one-on-one mock interview day, where students were interviewed as if by a potential employer.
“We continue to explore ways to help prepare our students, and this workshop series provides a focused week of activity to heighten student involvement and improve upon skills for the upcoming recruiting season,” Assistant Dean Cynthia Strittmatter said.
