John Mueller, professor in the Department of Student Affairs in Higher Education, spoke at a Forum on Student Affairs at Peking University in Beijing, China, on June 7, 2013.
The objective of the forum was to create a dialogue about the role, structure, and practice of student affairs in the U.S. and in China. Hong Zhu, professor in the Graduate School of Education at Peking University and one of the leading scholars on student affairs in China, spoke about student development and higher education in China. Mueller discussed college student development as it is conceptualized and practiced in the U.S.
The forum was part of a three-week study tour of higher education in China. The study tour, coordinated by Miami University (Ohio), examined the delivery of higher education in China, including admissions, curriculum, and student services.
The tour included institutional visits to Tsinghua University, Peking University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, and Xian Jiaotong University. The trip was rounded out by visits to some of China’s most significant economic, cultural, and historic landmarks, including the Forbidden City, National Olympic Stadium, the Great Wall, the Shanghai Futures Exchange, and the Terracotta Warriors.
