The Lively Arts at IUP has just announced its full line-up of touring performances slated for the 2013–2014 season.
From September through April, the Ovations! series will offer 12 events. With the Lively Arts soon to enter its 24th season of presenting touring performances, this will be the third season for the Ovations! series.
Committed to bringing unique acts to Indiana, the 2013–2014 Ovations! season will kick off on September 30, 2013, with the ZOFO Piano Duet. Pianists Eva-Maria Zimmerman of Switzerland and Keisuke Nakagoshi of Japan have electrified audiences from Carnegie Hall to all corners of the earth. With a repertoire that spans centuries, they have brought a renewed focus to four-hand piano performance.
In the area of theater, the series will once again offer two Broadway hit musicals. Just in time for the Halloween season, The Addams Family motors into Fisher Auditorium October 24. Then, on February 27, the hit Broadway musical Beauty and the Beast hits town. A special family-friendly curtain time of 7:00 p.m. has been set for this blockbuster Disney extravaganza.
Along the lines of Broadway, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra will be back next season, this time bringing the Pittsburgh Pops in a Valentine’s Day concert. Featuring two Broadway singers, the concert will be the perfect date for February 14.
Adding a dose of musical and theatrical unpredictability, the improvisational troupe Baby Wants Candy will offer theater-goers a create-on-the-spot musical comedy. This amazing troupe will join forces with Indiana High School and IUP students to offer up two shows in one at the Indiana High School.
Returning to Indiana next season will be one of the Lively Arts’ most talked about groups of all time, Mnozil Brass. This hilarious and quirky septet from Austria will showcase their off-the-wall talent and end the Indiana concert with a one-of-a-kind, unpredictable “brass off” involving some of our IUP brass students and faculty.
Also in the area of music and in time for the holidays, Rhythmic Circus combines live music, tap dance, and a big dose of theatrical flare. This young powerhouse troupe of performers will offer a rousing blend of entertainment for every age with an early curtain time of 7:00 p.m.
Acoustic blues guitarist, vocalist, and composer Corey Harris will perform in celebration of Black History Month. He has appeared around the world and with greats such as B.B. King, Taj Mahal, Buddy Guy, and others.
Also on deck during the Spring semester will be Sybarite5 and Grace Kelly. Sybarite5 offers a new voice and style in classical chamber music performing unique arrangements from Mozart to Radiohead to original works. Kelly will offer up a distinctive style of jazz as a saxophonist, vocalist, composer, and arranger along with her unparalleled band.
Rounding out the wide variety of performing arts offerings for the season will be two leading dance companies. Koresh Dance brings its explosive, high-energy style to the Fisher stage in November, with the country’s premiere Latino dance troupe, Ballet Hispanico, offering up a combination of styles and rhythms in March.
Advance information about season subscriptions will be sent by the end of June to all those who have donated through the Lively Arts’ Premiere Club. Those donating at the $250 level and above will receive top priority for select seats. Season brochures will be sent in early July to all those on the Lively Arts mailing list.
