Carl Rahkonen, music librarian, presented a paper entitled “Wilho Saari: Finnish American Kantele Master” at the seventh International Baltic Psaltery Symposium in Viljandi, Estonia, on March 24, 2013.

The Baltic psaltery, a type of zither, is the national instrument of Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Finland.

The Symposium met in three places in Estonia. It began at the National Museum in Tartu, where attendees were able to examine all the Baltic psalteries in their collection. Concerts and formal presentations were held at the national Folk Music Center in Viljandi. One day of the symposium was held at the Bagpipe Farm Retreat in the village of Riidaja.

Rahkonen’s presentation was on kantele player and composer Wilho Saari, who lives in Neselle, Washington, and was the 2011 Finlandia Foundation Performer of the Year. He is grateful for travel funding from the University Senate Research Committee.
