Online Writing Center Available for Summer Classes

Posted on 5/6/2013 10:02:32 AM

Live peer tutoring is available during all Summer sessions through the IUP Online Writing Center. The Online Writing Center will be available from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings beginning May 22, 2013.

The Online Writing Center uses WebEx, a Web conferencing platform, to provide real-time interaction between students and tutors. Similar to Skype and other conferencing tools, the Online Writing Center lets students share their screen with a Writing Center tutor and talk to the tutor using a microphone and speakers. A tutor can then provide comments and suggestions so students can revise their papers as they work together. The tutor can also provide Web resources to help with proofreading, formatting references, and other tasks.

We recommend that students have a working microphone and speakers, a high-speed Internet connection, and the latest version of Java. Users will not be asked to download anything or create a WebEx account, but will need to allow the conferencing software to run. Check to see if your computer meets the minimum system requirements.

Online appointments are conducted no sooner than 24 hours after the time that students make an appointment. For example, if a student accesses the online appointment calendar at 7:00 p.m. on a Monday night, the soonest he or she will be able to meet with a tutor is 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday.

To access the appointment calendar and download helpful instructions for how to use the Online Writing Center, visit the Writing Center’s website and click “Meet Us Online.” Students and professors will have access to an instructional video, a downloadable instruction guide, and the link to the SetMore appointment calendar.

Students and professors are also invited to ask the Writing Center questions on our Facebook page, by tweeting @IUPWriting, or by calling us at 724-357-3029.
