For the third consecutive year, the Management Association (MA) had the exciting opportunity to tour the headquarters of Sheetz, a popular convenience store with over 440 locations, in Altoona, Pa., on April 3, 2013.
Each year, MA students look forward to this fun, interactive trip that allows them to network with successful business professionals and see new, groundbreaking initiatives in process at Sheetz.
The tour was led by Earl Springer, Sheetz manager of employee programs, who is known as the “father of made-to-order (MTO) food.” Springer was the employee who suggested the popular MTO concept.
MA students were “wow-ed” when they toured the distribution center, where Sheetz packages most of its MTO food. There, they had the opportunity to see the inner working of the center.
Students were also able to tour the “Shwellness Center,” a new on-site center that promotes healthy living to Sheetz employees and families. They were able to meet and speak with Stan Sheetz, one of the Sheetz brothers who heads the company.
“MA’s Sheetz trip is always a highlight of the semester,” said Jessica Shaw, secretary of MA. “Sheetz treats everyone with respect and a smile, that’s what keeps customers coming back to stores, employees coming back to work, and IUP coming back to learn more!”
This experience provided MA with cutting-edge business skills involving all aspects of running a business that they will be able to apply to their future careers.
