Geoscience faculty member Steve Hovan attended the Best Practices in Marcellus Shale Education conference on March 18–19, 2013, at Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y.
The focus of the conference was on education and outreach practices in communicating about Marcellus shale gas drilling and other polarizing issues. The Marcellus Shale will serve as a case study from which we can learn about energy education more broadly, including attention to the challenges of teaching the science of a controversial issue.
The conference was hosted by the Paleontological Research Institution and the Cornell Cooperative Extension Marcellus Outreach Team and attended by a variety of educators from Pennsylvania and New York. More information about the conference and a list of resources for teaching and learning about Marcellus Shale and the broader energy system can be found at the Paleontological Research Institution website.
