Jack Stamp, Department of Music, presented two days of clinics with bands in the East Stroudsburg South School District, culminating with the premiere of two works, one for the high school band and one for the sixth grade band. In addition, a work commissioned by J.T. Lambert Middle School seven years ago was repeated in performance.
The East Stroudsburg School District has had a long-time commissioning program. This year, the high school director and IUP alumnus Katye Clogg (M.A., 2009) chose Stamp to write a work for the band. The work is entitled “Junket,” defined as a pleasurable excursion of unknown destination.
During the negotiations of the actual concert, the sixth-grade band director, Matthew Whitney (B.S., 2006) contacted Stamp about his output for elementary band. Stamp responded with writing a second work, entitled “Song for Newtown,” in memory and honor of those teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School. The work was meant for elementary school musicians to have a performance vehicle by which to expression their condolences to students of their same age group.
