In a regional CFA Institute research challenge requiring extreme mental skill, four students in the Eberly College of Business and Information Technology represented IUP and competed against local universities in Pittsburgh on February 16, 2013.

The IUP team, consisting of Brian Foster-Pegg, Cory Ireland, Sean Shapiro, and Nathan Rosenberg, was charged with the task of evaluating Consol Energy Inc. and writing an analyst report with a buy, sell, and hold rating.

The team then presented the report to a panel of CFA charter holders. The presenters were judged against the other participating universities: the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, West Virginia University, and Penn State Berhend.

Regarding the challenge, Ireland stated, “The CFA Institute Research Challenge was the ultimate simulation of what to expect throughout our professional lives. We put textbook theory to real-life application, and have never felt more accomplished for doing so.”

While the University of Pittsburgh took first place in the competition, the placing of IUP is still pending.
