Renée Fleming, who will present a rare recital program on Saturday, March 2, 2013, in Fisher Auditorium, received her fourth Grammy Award as part of the 55th Grammys held on Sunday, February 10, in Los Angeles.
Her 15th nomination, she received the award for Best Classical Vocal Performance for her album Poémes. The recording, on the Decca lable, is a collection of masterpieces by a variety of French composers.
Other vocalists nominated included Natalie Dessay, Joyce DiDonato, Ute Lemper, and Anne Sofie Von Otter.
Fleming’s most recent Grammy was awarded in 2010, also for Best Classical Vocal Performance, for Verismo (Decca/September 2009), a CD featuring a collection of rarely heard Italian arias. Also in 2010, Decca and Mercury records released the CD Dark Hope, which features Fleming covering songs by indie-rock and pop artists.
Recent DVD releases include Handel's Rodelinda, Massenet’s Thaïs and Rossini’s Armida, and Verdi’s Traviata, filmed at London’s Royal Opera House. Fleming's 2010 DVD Renée Fleming & Dmitri Hvorostovsky: A Musical Odyssey in St. Petersburg follows her and baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky as they perform in some of St. Petersburg's most historic locations. In recent years, she has recorded everything from Strauss’s complete Daphne to the jazz album Haunted Heart to the movie soundtrack of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
She recorded Alexandre Desplat's theme song, “Still Dream,” for the soundtrack of the Dreamworks animation feature Rise of the Guardians, a major Thanksgiving 2012 release. Her recording honors range from the 2009 Echo Award for Strauss’s Four Last Songs to the Prix Maria Callas Orphée d’Or by the Académie du Disque Lyric for TDK’s DVD production of Capriccio.
Fleming, born in Indiana, Pennsylvania, returns for this rare recital performance, subtitled “Back Home Again in Indiana.” She will be joined by Richard Bado, pianist, also a native of Western Pennsylvania. Over 30 members of Fleming’s family, including her father—a 1959 IUP music graduate—will be in the audience for the recital.
