The Lively Arts is offering a wide variety of holiday connections this season from Christmas music, to holiday gifts, to family entertainment.
If you are looking for something to do with the entire family, just follow the waving Jolly Roger as IUP Music Theater presents its light-hearted production of The Pirates of Penzance in Fisher Auditorium. This Gilbert and Sullivan musical classic will be performed Friday and Saturday, November 30 and December 1, 2012, at 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday, December 2, at 2:00 p.m.
Family fun continues with the Dreamworks production of Shrek: the Musical, direct from Broadway. This national touring event will be in town for one performance only on Monday, December 10. There is even an early family-friendly curtain time of 7:00 p.m. for this Fisher Auditorium performance. We highly recommend getting your tickets in advance.
The Lively Arts is also offering a holiday gift promotion that runs through December 12. During this period, tickets for all spring series events are on sale through the HUB box office (724-357-1313) or through IUP Tickets. This is your opportunity to guarantee that a friend, a family member, a colleague, or even yourself will enjoy several of our upcoming sensations, such as opera superstar Renée Fleming, the Broadway tour of Hair: the American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, the Music Theater and Theater-by-the-Grove production of You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, or any of several other series events in the Spring semester.
For another great stocking stuffer, check out Christmas Postcards From the HoodleBug Brass. Just released by the IUP resident brass quintet, this recording marks the ensemble’s first commercial CD. Featuring 15 tracks of music for the Christmas season, this collection will be sampled when the quintet performs a free concert on December 4, at 8:00 p.m. in the DiCicco Rehearsal Studio in Cogswell Hall. There will be a CD signing party following the performance. Copies of the recording are also available locally from the IUP Bookstore and the Artists Hand Gallery and through iTunes, Amazon, and CDBaby.
If you are hunting for a present that is a unique expression of local visual art, you will be interested in the IUP Ceramic Sale running November 30 and December 1 from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The sale is a semi-annual event held in the Robertshaw Building at 650 South 13th St. The sale will include works by students, instructors, and local potters. Proceeds from the sale help to benefit IUP ceramics programs and activities.
Also available in the visual arts area is a colorful book titled Paintings of Indiana County, featuring a collection of paintings by IUP alumnus Ron Donoughe. The book is offered by the University Museum and contains 80 pages on high-quality paper.
