One of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s most popular theatrical collaborations, The Pirates of Penzance, will be presented by IUP Music Theater in Fisher Auditorium of the IUP Performing Arts Center. This highly popular family operetta, which has had highly successful Broadway runs, will be presented November 30 to December 1, 2012, at 8:00 p.m. and on December 2 at 2:00 p.m.
The Pirates of Penzance was composed in 1879 and had its official premiere at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York City. The production was very successful and ran for three months to critical acclaim. Over the years, there have been various modernized versions of Pirates. Its best-known revival came in 1981 with the Joseph Papp version presented on Broadway by the New York Shakespeare Festival. That production received a Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Musical.
The story of The Pirates of Penzance centers around Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. They are led by the famous, infamous, and egocentric Pirate King.
Soon after the dutiful Federic meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, the two young innocents fall instantly in love. Meanwhile, the pirates plan to capture the Major-General’s many daughters and marry them on the spot. In typical comic opera fashion, numerous complications ensue, all ending happily after swashbuckling finale with the Penzance Police.
The score contains some of Sullivan’s most popular songs, including the famous “I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General” and “Poor Wandering One.” The IUP production is directed by Sarah Mantel with choreography by Joan Van Dyke. The production and orchestra are conducted by Keith Young.
Tickets are available online at IUP Tickets. Tickets may also be purchased at the Hadley Union Building box office or by calling (724) 357-1313. Tickets remaining will be sold at the door starting one hour before the performance.
