Theater-by-the-Grove, produced by the IUP Department of Theater and Dance, will present the press premiere of In Quietness by Anna Moench on November 1, 2012. The production will run November 1–3 and 7–10 at 8:00 p.m. A matinee will be offered on Sunday, November 4, at 2:00 p.m. Performances will be on the Waller Hall Mainstage of the IUP Performing Arts Center.

This fresh, witty, and surprising new play takes place on move-in weekend at a Southern Baptist seminary in Texas. Max, a CEO at 29, has given up her career to support her husband, Paul, in his quest to become a pastor. Unknown to her, his decision rests on a guilty secret and a deal he has made with God.

Max’s position as a resident advisor in a homemaking house on campus brings her into contact with women who have views very different from her own, including Terri Patterson, dean of Women’s Programs, and Beth, a devout young Baptist with her own guilty secret. As the characters struggle to define themselves in the context of their beliefs and their relationships, the results are both moving and comic.

According to director Rick Kemp, “It’s a delight to work with such a well-crafted play. The characters are wrestling with substantial issues; but, at the same time, the dialogue is sharp and funny. It’s a great opportunity for audiences to see the work of a talented young playwright whose work is just taking off nationally and internationally.”

In Quietness

Kemp further explains that In Quietness is intimately staged, so the audience has a close-up view of the action. The imaginative scenic design allows the action to take place simultaneously in multiple locations and will be instantly recognizable to anyone who has ever shopped in Ikea.

Kemp, a member of the IUP theater faculty, has over 30 years professional experience as an actor and director, gained in the United Kingdom, Europe, and the U.S.A. He has received numerous awards, including the French government’s Institut Francais award, the British Telecom Innovations Award, and the 2004 Heinz Endowments Creative Heights Award.

Moench just received the prestigious Jerome Fellowship, a national award presented by the Playwrights Center. These have been awarded since 1976, with previous recipients including renowned playwrights Lee Blessing and August Wilson. The play is being presented as part of Theater-by-the-Grove’s commitment to the Women Playwrights Initiative of the National Theatre Conference.

In Quietness contains language and situations to which some audience members may object.
