On the beautiful morning of May 5, 2012, 80 participants geared up to run the James G. Mill Fitness Center’s second annual 5K Run/Walk.
The event kicked off with some music and a few motivational words to encourage the runners before the big race took place. Many of the runners and walkers began their preparation for the 3.1-mile race with a few stretches and some exercises to warm their bodies up, as well as some refreshments provided by the gym.
The course began near the softball and baseball fields on IUP’s South Campus and continued down a hill, where the racers made a loop. As they traveled back up the hill, the road led onto a bike path. This path met up with the Hoodlebug Trail and made one more turn around to come back to the beginning of the course.
Each runner displayed on their identification bib a pink ribbon to honor those currently fighting and those who have passed away from breast cancer. The proceeds from the race were donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Breast cancer is the third leading cause of death in women in the United States today, and many of those involved with both the organization and those running in the race know someone who is currently suffering or has suffered from this disease. For those who are personally affected by this disease, each step closer to the finish line was one step closer to finding a cure.
The first to cross the finish line was Sam Schilling with a time of 19:57. The top three winners from each age category were named and received a medal. While many of the participants ran the race, there were quite a few who walked and made some very impressive times as well!
This is a culminating event for the fitness center each year, and we hope that the participation continues to grow. With the competition from another 5K in the area, the Pittsburgh Marathon, and the Boston Marathon being held that same weekend, the turnout was very impressive.
We look forward to seeing what next year holds and to find out what important cause all of the racers will be running for! Our facility would like to give a special thanks to all those who helped and participated in this beneficial and fun event.
See you next year!
