IUP Music Department student organizations joined forces with the IUP String Project in the Spring 2012 semester in several fundraising efforts to support arts education programs for youth in Haiti.
Fundraising events hosted by the IUP String Project director, Linda Jennings, included a screening of Kenbe La, a new documentary portraying the powerful positive impact of arts education on the lives of youth in Haiti, and a talk by Haitian music educator and earthquake survivor Fabienne Fanord. These events were sponsored by the IUP Latin American Studies minor program and the IUP String Project.
In addition, IUP Music student organizations Sigma Alpha Iota, Delta Omicron, Phi Mu Epsilon, and Pennsylvania Collegiate Music Educators Association hosted the Penny Cogswell Wars to raise funds to help young musicians who continue to face many challenges in Haiti.
The funds raised ($500) will support a new music education program at the Foyer Maurice Sixto School in Carrefour, a community 30 miles outside of Port au Prince. This school provides education for restavek children, who, due to poverty, are forced into positions of unpaid domestic labor and often have no opportunities to attend school. These funds will provide an opportunity for students at the school to attend a prominent summer music camp hosted by the Holy Trinity Music School in Port au Prince this summer.
