Bernadette Peters, performing at IUP this Friday, May 4, 2012, has been chosen to receive the Isabelle Stevenson Award during the upcoming Tony Award celebration. The award will be presented during the 66th annual Tony Awards, presented by the Broadway League and American Theatre Wing during a live CBS television broadcast on Sunday, June 10, hosted by actor and singer Neil Patrick Harris.
As reported in Playbill.com on April 30, 2012, the Isabelle Stevenson Award recognizes an ”individual from the theater community who has made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of one or more humanitarian, social service, or charitable organizations, regardless of whether such organizations relate to the theater.”
Peters, along with Mary Tyler Moore, founded Broadway Barks as a program to promote the adoption of shelter animals. Peters has also written two children’s books to benefit the charity: Broadway Barks and Stella is a Star. Additionally, Peters works with Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, Standing Tall, and Actors Fund of America.
Throughout her illustrious career, Peters has dazzled audiences and critics the world over. In addition to her 2012 Tony nomination, Peters has been honored with seven previous Tony Award nominations. She has received Tony Awards for her leading roles in Song and Dance and Annie Get Your Gun, a Golden Globe, two Grammy Awards, and three Emmy nominations. She also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Prior to the highly successful run of Stephen Sondheim’s Broadway revival of Follies, Peters was seen in Sondheim’s A Little Night Music. Other Broadway appearances include Gypsy, Annie Get Your Gun, Sunday in the Park with George, On the Town, Into the Woods, and many more since her 1967 Broadway debut.
Her long list of movie credits includes Pennies from Heaven, The Jerk, The Longest Yard, and Annie, with television appearances ranging from Ugly Betty to Grey’s Anatomy to the recent NBC-TV series Smash, among others.
The Bernadette Peters performance, which includes a 28-piece orchestra, will begin at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4, in Fisher Auditorium of the IUP Performing Arts Center.
