Keith Dils, interim dean of the College of Education and Educational Technology, presented the first scholarships from the Roy and Erma J. Mattern Memorial Fund today to Staci Harnden, Brittany Krestar, and Kelsey Matarazzo. All three students are studying in the Early Childhood Education with Special Education Program.
The scholarship was endowed by the Roy and Erma J. Mattern Trust. Roy Mattern graduated from the Indiana Normal School in 1928 with a degree in Education. He worked in a variety of positions, retiring as a principal from the Pittsburgh Public School System. He and his wife, Erma, established a trust as part of their financial plans. Upon their deaths, the IUP Alumni Association was among the beneficiaries. To honor the life and professional accomplishments of Roy Matten, the IUP Alumni Association has chosen to establish an endowed fund with the intent to support the mission and programs at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
