Cordis to Present Contemporary Chamber Concert

Posted on 3/30/2012 11:08:36 AM

The Lively Arts at IUP, as part of its Ovations! series, will present the chamber ensemble Cordis. The contemporary group fuses the sound of original custom-made with traditional instruments for a truly unique sound. The concert will be presented Monday, April 9, 2012, at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall, which is located on the second floor of John Sutton Hall.

As a contemporary quartet, Cordis is one of the first internationally acclaimed groups from the United States to feature an electronic cimbalom. Concert cimbalomist Richard Grimes, the found of the group, will be joined by Jeremy Harman, cello, Brian O’Neill, piano, and Andrew Beall, percussion.

Based in New York, one-of-a-kind instruments such as the electric mbira (thumb piano), melodica (key-flute), and the world’s longest playing cylinder-driven music box also have a way of weaving their way into any given performance. Each concert is unique, and there is no telling what new sounds the audience may experience.

Grimes developed a passion for the concert cimbalom after attending a performance in 1991 by renowned Hungarian cimbalomist Viktoria Herencsar. Grimes completed classical training in the United States and traveled to Hungary to study with Herencsar. He was a featured presenter at the 2001 Percussive Arts Society International Conference and recently completed a book detailing the divergent paths of the classical and gypsy concert cimbalom performance practices in 20th-century Hungary.

Time Out New York said, “(Cordis) makes a strong case for both sides of its musical personality, expanding the boundaries of chamber music.” concurred: “Cordis offers an intriguing mix of instrumentation, and Grimes uses them well to show off his unique perspective on 21st century chamber music.”
