Three Eberly students took second place in the CFA Institute Global Investment Challenge on February 23, 2012, at the Rivers Club.
The focus of the challenge was EQT Corp., a natural gas producer. The teams were responsible for looking into the natural gas industry, the company’s competitors, and how they manage the challenges of the market.
IUP’s team consisted of Matt Wilking, who handled the majority of the financial analysis; team leader Nate Wygonik, who handled the report; and Michael Williamson, who handled the issues pertaining to the gas industry and Marcellus Shale.
The students spent from October 2011 to February 2012 researching the topics and preparing a presentation to be judged against other universities by CFA judges.
“The Challenge was a tremendous learning experience, really forcing the three of us to pull together elements from across curricula and apply them to an in-depth case study,” said Wygonik. “Certainly, competing in the Challenge changed our perspectives on coursework, altered how we approach our work with the Student Managed Investment Portfolio, molded career goals, and influenced our individual philosophies on personal investing."
The other schools IUP competed against were California University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, Penn State Berhend, University of Pittsburgh, and Washington and Jefferson.
